Melbourne Nightlife – Music Festivals!

Melbourne plays hosts to a variety of music festivals around the year and Tipsy Koala rounded up a list for you to enjoy!

 

 

 

Jerome’s Laneway Festival – Not many people know that the Laneway festival originated from Caledonian Lane, Melbourne in 2005, removing the bins and staging a laneway party for 1400 odd people to now expanding in all major Aussie cities as well as International sold out events in Auckland, Singapore, Detroit etc. It still majorly focuses on music genres like Indie pop, Rock and features loads of Independent music. They have featured artists like Tame Impala , Grimes , Lorde ,  Aurora etc.

 

 

The Falls Music and Art Festival – The Falls Music & Arts Festival (or The Falls) is a multi-day music festival held annually in Lorne over the New Year’s Eve. The festival hosts artists of pretty much all genres – rock, hip hop, indie music, electronic music, blues and roots. The Falls festival has grown both in popularity amongst Melbourne party goers and stature of artists performing each year with names like Childish Gambino , London Grammar , Hilltop Hoods , Arctic Monkeys , Bloc Party , Disclosure etc.

 

Groovin’ The Moo : Groovin” The Moo or GTM is an annual music festival, held around autumn (early may) in six regional centres across Australia – Bendigo in Victoria. The festival is always a sell-out and features music genres like Rock, Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, Hip-hop, Electronic, Metalcore etc. Some of the headline acts in the past were Ratatat , Alison Wonderland , Peking Duk etc. Also good to mention “The Plot” is a sister music festival to Groovin’ The Moo which focuses more on Electronic, Dance, and Indie Rock music and is held in metropolitan cities, unlike GTM which is held in various regional centers across Australia.

 

Rainbow Serpent : What better to spend Australia Day long weekend than being part of the Rainbow Serpent festival. Named after the Aboriginal dreamtime creation myth of the Rainbow Serpent, the festival calls Victoria its home. Rainbow serpent features music genres like psychedelic trance, techno, EDM etc. and is famous for its colourful art installations, costumes and emphasis on performance and art. The festival hosts parallel performances on 5 different stages with some of them running 24 hours. Some of the more famous acts have featured artists like Robert Babicz , David Tipper , Shpongle , Astrix etc.

 

Meredith Music Festival : Commonly known as Meredith or MMF, this festival is an experience in itself. A true Victorian success story, the festival began with a 200 people assembly on the Nolan farm near Meredith, Victoria – hence the name. It is still held on the Nolan farm with locals pitching in for BBQ and BYO drinks and features a variety of music genres usually small independent artists. Notable artists who have performed over the years in MMF are Nile Rodgers , Peaches , King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard , Sheila E. etc.
